PopFest 2025: 29th Annual Postgraduate Population Studies Conference

Description

In conjunction with the British Society for Population Studies (BSPS) and the ESRC Centre for Population Change Connecting Generations, PopFest 2025 will take place at the University of Southampton on 6th – 8th July 2025.

PopFest is an annual Population Studies conference for postgraduate students, organised by postgraduate students. It brings together researchers from various Social Science disciplines including Demography, Human Geography, Sociology, Social and Applied Statistics, and other related fields.

PopFest provides a supportive learning environment for postgraduate students to present and discuss their work with their peers, and to get feedback and ideas from fellow researchers. The conference is a great networking opportunity, giving participants a chance to learn about the breadth of population research being conducted.

This is an in-person only event.

Troubled Times: Gender and Politics in the 21st Century

Description

A conference exploring contemporary challenges in gender and politics, hosted by the GAIN Centre at the University of Southampton in partnership with the PSA Women and Politics Specialist Group.

The backlash against gender equality can be found in public opinion, public policy and recent election results across the globe. Conservative movements, populist politics, and media representation have coalesced to push back against gender equity gains, meaning gender equality actors are forced to resist and contest this backsliding.

The rise of anti-feminist rhetoric and the erosion of reproductive rights are symptomatic of a broader political climate that seeks to reassert traditional gender norms and undermine the feminist agenda. Yet, alongside these challenges, feminist activism and scholarship continue to pushback, developing strategies to counteract and resist the roll back of hard-won feminist gains.

Amid these struggles, there are also signs of hope, with some countries continuing to advance equality, enshrining protections in policies, legislation, and constitutions – progress that deserves recognition and celebration.
