Introduction to QGIS online

This online course offers the unique combination of giving you a solid introduction to the popular free and open source software QGIS and providing dedicated 1 to 1 support to get your own GIS project started.

This course is intended for those who have little or no QGIS knowledge.

Course Description

This course introduces the underlying principles and methods of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). It examines the processes involved in the capture, storage, manipulation, analysis, presentation and output of digital geographical data in a GIS and provides opportunities for the development of practical skills in processing data using a leading Open Source GIS software package, QGIS.

The course comprises a series of presentations and practical sessions using QGIS software with example data sets taken from a variety of fields. The main elements of the QGIS user interface are introduced and topics covered include: data management, data visualisation, analysis, data presentation and reporting. The course finishes off with a personal 1 to 1 session where the trainer provides hands on support to help you mapping your own data, it provides 11 hours of training split across three sessions plus a short session to ensure you are set-up for the course.

Course structure:

The course is based on a zoom video call and runs over four sessions.
The first session is very short connection test to ensure your learning experience will not be hindered by technical issues. Session two and three are run as a small group with each session lasting 6 hours plus an hour long break for lunch and shorter breaks in the morning and afternoon. The sessions comprise a series of presentations, demos and practical exercises with the trainer being available for help at all times. The last session is a booked one-hour slot of 1 to 1 help with the trainer. This session is meant to work on your own data/workflow and resolve potential queries. The slot will be at a mutually convenient time within 1 week of course finishing.
