Detailed Description
The book DESERT brings together the photographs of Hannah Collins, Knut Maron, Michal Rovner, Thomas Ruff, Sophie Ristelhueber, Frederick Sommer, Verdi Yahooda and Bill Viola's single monitor video (all of whose works are shown in the similarly titled exhibition), with an anthology of writings on the desert.
Behind this process lies the desire to examine the relationship between the image -textual and photographic -and the world for which it (the image) provides a trace.
That world is the physical desert: a site reduced, from the European perspective at least, to a generic term covering the numerous but real topographic lands, apparently unable to support life; but which, nevertheless, provides a fertile metaphor for a range of physical, spiritual and psychological experiences.
