Detailed Description
From the back of the book: Here is a definitive monograph based on extensive original research, bringing together for the first time much information which is widely scattered, or never appeared in print before. Mainly concerned with professional photographers who conducted their business on the Isle of Wight before 1940, it is intended for use largely as a reference work and source book. At its heart are Historical Directory of Isle of Wight Photographers (1840-1940) and Exhibition Survey (1850-1900).
These are supplemented by sections on Prehistory of Isle of Wight Photography and Early Photography in Ryde. Individual photographers are dealt with in: The First Commercial Photographers; Jabez Hughes & Julia Margaret Cameron; and Biographical Miscellany (40 subjects). Another section reprints selected 19th century photographic articles relating to the Island. There are also notes on IW books illustrated with (original) photographs, and IW photographic societies.
