BAAL Language, Gender and Sexuality SIG - Feeling, Meaning, Doing: Affect in Language, Gender and Se

This year’s annual BAAL Language, Gender and Sexuality SIG event is focussed on the connection between the notion of affect and the field of language, gender and sexuality. Affect in this context is defined in multiple ways, including:

- emotions, feelings and intensity of response as the object of research
- investigations into the way language affects people and the social world around us (i.e. language as a driving force for social change)
- affectations in expressions of identity

The keynote speakers at this event will be:
- Dr Daniel Edmondson – Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at York St John University
- This year’s Judith Baxter award winner – to be announced early 2026
