This one-day workshop will:

  • Discuss the data management techniques needed to use child and youth data (merging data, creating variables, linking parental data) and how these may differ based on the type of data (panel, cohort). 
  • Refresh the basic analytical methods for longitudinal analysis of child and youth data (OLS regression, fixed and random effects models and path models).
  • Show how to implement these data management and analytical techniques in child and youth data using practical examples.

Course Description

The course covers:

  • Data management

  • Basic cohort and panel data analysis

  • Running simple data analysis on real data sets

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand the activities needed to prepare both cohort and panel data for analysis 
  • Have reviewed the basic regression and panel data methods that can be used to analyse child and youth cohort and panel dat
  • Be able to prepare child and youth cohort and panel data and run basic regression models

Pre-requisites:

Some prior knowledge of programming would be desirable but not essential.  Experience with some statistical package should be sufficient to understand and run the exercises. Ideally, if you want to participate in the practical element of the course, have Stata (at least version 12) or R installed on your computer. 

Course Format:

One-day course, starting 9.30PM and finishing 4.30PM, with an one hour lunch break. Morning will be standard teaching/discussion and afternoon will be guided examples.
