We look forward to welcoming both new and returning students to the University of Southampton. Unless otherwise stated, all courses will be taught in person at our Avenue Campus.

We would like to advise that you will need to have the appropriate technology and suitable internet connection in place, as we will be making use of online materials. At Southampton, we use a virtual learning environment (VLE) called Blackboard which is used to deliver learning materials and real-time online teaching for our students.

We are pleased to announce that our next Portuguese Beginners Stage 1a course will start in January 2027. This is an ideal opportunity to try out learning the language before committing to a longer period of study.

Our Language courses run for 10 weeks each term and include a half-term break. Please see our Book a course page for term dates, including half-term and seasonal holiday dates.

Portuguese Beginners Stage 1a

This course will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.30pm starting on 6th January 2027 and finishing on 17th March 2027. Please note there will be no class during half-term week on Wednesday 17th February 2027.

Please note: If you select the staff/student/alumni price option, you must use an online store account that has been set up with your University email address and fill out your University staff, student or alumni ID number when prompted as part of the questionnaire data section.

Taster Courses (Stage 1a)

These short courses are an ideal way for you to try out learning a new language before committing to a longer period of study. Our taster courses take place over a period of 10 weeks and will cover the material from the first part of our Stage 1 courses.
