Course Description

This module will provide an introduction to microbial cells, their structure, how they replicate their genetic content and how they express their genes.

This will be followed by the study of mechanisms of biofilm formation and the interactions found between microbes in polymicrobial biofilms.

The module will also cover examples of models used to study biofilms and imaging techniques employed to visualise them.

Finally, different antimicrobial targets found in biofilms, mechanisms of antibiotic resistance as well as approaches used to discover new antimicrobials and the drug approval process will be studied. The course will be complemented with demonstrations on biofilm models and imaging techniques including a tour of some state imaging facilities at Nottingham University.

At the start of the course you will be given a case study by representatives from Industry and a clinician on biofilm infection management.

You will work in groups from Monday to Thursday on the case study and on the preparation of a pitch.

On the Friday you will pitch your outputs and receive feedback from the company representatives and the clinician who will select the best presentation for a prize.

There will be two evening of social activities which will provide you networking opportunities and spark cross institutional and industry discussions.

Registration includes attendance to all lectures and demonstrations, access to course materials, lunches and networking events including the official course dinner.
