The training is designed to introduce researchers and PGRs to using drawing methodologies in Social Science Research and give them practical experience of doing so. It will provide an overview of the use of drawing in social sciences, focusing particularly on the turn towards 'live sociology' and creative ethnographic methods in recent years.

Course Description

In addition to presentations from researchers who have both used drawing based methods, the two-day training session will include many practical group drawing exercises and group analysis sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the potential uses of drawing on their curent and potential research projects, either as researcher-led or as part of a participatory methodology.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the two sessions participants will:

  • Be familiar with the possibilities afforded by drawing in research at all stages of the research process (design, fieldwork, analysis)
  • Have experience of engaging in drawing based ‘seeing’ in a live context, and have experience of a group analysis session using  drawing
  • Be able to visualise and re-present their research project in drawn form
  • Feel able to consider drawing as a methodological strand in their current or potential research

This in-person training event combines teaching in a seminar room and outside fieldwork exercises. It will take place over two consecutive days and will equate to 1.5 days of teaching for payment purposes. Lunch will be provided on both days. Event timings follow:
