Southampton Record Series Volume 50: The Remembrance Books of Richard Goddard 1583, John Crook 1584 And Andrew Studeley 1586

Description

We are pleased to announce the publication of volume 49 in the Records Series, The Remembrance Books of Richard Goddard 1583, John Crook 1584 And Andrew Studeley 1586

The Remembrance Books are more accurately records of examinations and depositions, which are witness statements of cases being investigated by local justices to ascertain if they should be referred to the quarter sessions. They are of particular interest as the quarter session records for Hampshire in this period no longer exist. The listing of these records as remembrances meant they were over looked by the Record Society editors who transcribed examinations of the 1590s and early 1600s. Records Series editor Sheila Thomson who worked on the 1648-1663 records identified the omission of surviving records from the 1570s and 1580s. The 1570s books were published last year (vol 49) and vol 50 covers both the 1580 records and all the surviving loose leave records. Volume 50 particularly looks at any differences in examinations in the two decades, notably in the 1580s there are more investigations in regard to matters of religion and this is examined in the introduction. Appendices also look at travel patterns of witnesses and examine the marks and signatures of witnesses left in the documents. With these volumes, alongside recent volumes from Tom Olding looking at the Piepowder Court, alongside earlier volumes on the Mayors Book of Fines and Admiralty Court Books, provide a fairly comprehensive view of the justice system in 16th century Southampton.
